Dave from Akiak Adeventures took my daughter and I for a half day climbing course. We both thoroughly enjoyed it. Dave was very encouraging and skilled at teaching. He provided us with information in manageable chunks, welcomed all of my silly questions and then added a new bit of instruction on with each climb we did! Dave is incredibly knowledgeable about the outdoors, and you feel confident learning alongside him. By the end of the two days I was successfully using compass bearings, orientating the map, using map features and my surroundings to find my location on the map, and timing and pacing distances accurately - all the skills I had wanted to learn. I found from the first conversation it was about what I wanted and needed rather than a set course. From there a tailored day was set for me. On arrival he was very welcoming and had everything set up ready. We went through everything planned for the day. I would like to point out I have brain damage, so we did have to go slower than expected. This was all taken into account by Dave, who already had the knowledge of how to best move forward for my learning and needs. I was hands on with every aspect of my tailored course. As a follow on, I will be booking another half/full day going through some more aspects of bushcraft and going out on my own.
